Innovation is an activity that does not always produce new products. Innovation is a product development effort from existing ones. Hence, the notion of innovation is the process of creativity that produces change resulting in the addition of the value of a product.
The definition of innovation comes from English to innovate which according to Oxford Dictionary is to make a change or introduce something new that gives added value. When you succeed in adding value to either the product or service or the work process, it can be said that what you are doing is an innovation.
“If you're not failing every now and again, it's a sign you're not doing anything very innovative.”
Many of us often analogize innovation as a discovery. In fact, innovation is different from the discovery although the process works the same. The invention is to make something that was previously absent or unknown. An example of the discovery was the discovery of incandescent lamps by Thomas Alpha Edison in 1879. The incandescent lamp was later called a discovery because when Edison succeeded in making it, at that time there was no single scientist who managed to create lights or lighting devices with the help of electricity. The incandescent lamp is an example of a discovery because it is a new item that did not exist previously.
An example of innovation is the development of incandescent lamps made by Thomas Alpha Edison that is continuously made to this day and is developing into something more perfect and valuable. Well, an example of innovation from incandescent lights is today we know the various types of lights ranging from a bulb, wall lamps, garden lights, car lights, and even a flashlight on the smartphone. The presence of various types of lamps can not be said to be a discovery, but an example of innovation.
The old-fashioned incandescent lamps were then modified by innovators to produce a variety of lamps with various lamps. Therefore, the effort to change the incandescent lamp made by Edison is an example of innovation. But now maybe the innovation you are looking for is a flashing light that has a remote so you no longer need to walk to turn off the lights.
“Five percent of the people think; ten percent of the people think they think; and the other eighty-five percent would rather die than think.” ― Thomas A. Edison
In today's development, innovation is pervasive in scope. Innovation is not just about an object or a product but innovation can also mean a method or a way.
